Il Pensionato

I hear it from beyond the wall where every sound comes through,Lo sento da oltre il muro che ogni suono fa passare,
that almost poor smell of food to chew,l' odore quasi povero di roba da mangiare,
I see it in the light that I remember well,lo vedo nella luce che anch' io mi ricordo bene
of a dim bulb, the one with thirty candles to tell,di lampadina fioca, quella da trenta candele,
among furniture that’s never seen brighter days,fra mobili che non hanno mai visto altri splendori,
old newspapers and corners filled with dust and haze,giornali vecchi ed angoli di polvere e di odori,
among the strange, worn sounds of his daily routines:fra i suoni usati e strani dei suoi riti quotidiani:
eating, clearing up, then washing dishes and hands.mangiare, sgomberare, poi lavare piatti e mani.

I hear it when I come back tired and late in the morn,Lo sento quando torno stanco e tardi alla mattina
open the blinds, pull the curtain, feeling worn,aprire la persiana, tirare la tendina
and while I’m smoking yet another cigarette,e mentre sto fumando ancora un'altra sigaretta,
walking slow, in slippers, towards the day that’s set,andar piano, in pantofole, verso il giorno che lo aspetta
and then I meet him again when it’s my time,e poi lo incontro ancora quando viene l' ora mia,
he gives me a strange pleasure with his old-fashioned rhyme:mi dà un piacere assurdo la sua antica cortesia:
"Good morning, professor. How’s your lady today?"Buon giorno, professore. Come sta la sua signora?
And the cats? And this weather that won’t go away..."E i gatti? E questo tempo che non si rimette ancora..."

He tells me a hundred times through the garden’s net,Mi dice cento volte fra la rete dei giardini
about his dead cat, a fight with the neighbors he met,di una sua gatta morta, di una lite coi vicini
and he softly recounts, in his slightly hushed tone,e mi racconta piano, col suo tono un po' sommesso,
of when he and Bologna were younger, not alone...di quando lui e Bologna eran più giovani di adesso...

I listen and my thoughts chase after his life,Io ascolto e i miei pensieri corron dietro alla sua vita,
at all the faces seen from that old bulb’s light,a tutti i volti visti dalla lampadina antica,
at that usual smell of dust and mold,a quell' odore solito di polvere e di muffa,
at all the reheated soups on the stove, so bold,a tutte le minestre riscaldate sulla stufa,
at that tick-tock of the clock that emphasizes each second,a quel tic-tac di sveglia che enfatizza ogni secondo,
at how from that place you can see the world, beckoned,a come da quel posto si può mai vedere il mondo,
at a life spent in so many hard, equal days,a un' esistenza andata in tanti giorni uguali e duri,
at how even history passed through those walls in ways...a come anche la storia sia passata fra quei muri...

I listen and don’t understand, and all around me amazes,Io ascolto e non capisco e tutto attorno mi stupisce
the life, how it’s made and how one manages phases,la vita, com'è fatta e come uno la gestisce
and the thousand ways and times, then the possibilities,e i mille modi e i tempi, poi le possibilità,
the choices, the changes, fate, and necessities,le scelte, i cambiamenti, il fato, le necessità
and still I wonder if he was ever happy,e ancora mi domando se sia stato mai felice,
if he ever had a doubt, or if it’s just now sappy,se un dubbio l' ebbe mai, se solo oggi si assopisce,
if he had doubts a few times or often, I guess,se un dubbio l' abbia avuto poche volte oppure spesso,
if it was enough just to survive himself, no less...se è stato sufficiente sopravvivere a se stesso...

But then I realize it’s probably just a gnaw,Ma poi mi accorgo che probabilmente è solo un tarlo
of someone with plenty of time and the luxury to draw:di uno che ha tanto tempo ed anche il lusso di sprecarlo:
I can’t say if his solitude is worse than mine,non posso o non so dir per niente se peggiore sia,
at the end of the day, it’s all a thin line...a conti fatti, la sua solitudine o la mia...

Maybe one day we’ll say: "But he seemed so fine..."Diremo forse un giorno: "Ma se stava così bene..."
He’ll have marble with an angel breaking chains in line,Avrà il marmo con l' angelo che spezza le catene
with the money saved up, a bit because you never know,coi soldi risparmiati un po' perchè non si sa mai,
a bit out of habit: "Yeah, trouble’s always on show."un po' per abitudine: "eh, son sempre pronti i guai" .
We’ll see new faces, voices with smiles that are spent:Vedremo visi nuovi, voci dai sorrisi spenti:
"Nice to meet you," "It’s mine," "I’m glad," "Were you his relatives?""Piacere", "E' mio", "Son lieto", "Eravate suoi parenti?"
And little by little, it’ll fade from our crowded minds:E a poco a poco andrà via dalla nostra mente piena:
just an impression we’ll barely remember in kind...soltanto un' impressione che ricorderemo appena...
