The Piave whispered,Il Piave mormorava,
calm and peaceful, as the first troops passed by,calmo e placido, al passaggio
on May 24th.dei primi fanti, il 24 maggio.
The army marchedL'esercito marciava
to reach the borderper raggiunger la frontiera
to build a barrier against the enemy.per far contro il nemico una barriera.

Silent passed that night the soldiers:Muti passaron quella notte i fanti:
they had to be quiet, and move on!tacere bisognava, e andare avanti!
Meanwhile, from the beloved shores,S'udiva intanto dalle amate sponde,
the soft and gentle sound of the waves was heard.sommesso e lieve il tripudiar dell'onde.
It was a sweet and flattering omen,Era un presagio dolce e lusinghiero,
the Piave whispered:il Piave mormorò:

The foreigner shall not pass!Non passa lo straniero!

But on a sad night,Ma in una notte trista
talk of betrayal arose,si parlò di tradimento,
and the Piave heard the anger and dismay.e il Piave udiva l'ira e lo sgomento.
Oh, how many people it sawAhi, quanta gente ha vista
come down, leave their homes,venir giù, lasciare il tetto,
for the shame suffered at Caporetto!per l'onta consumata a Caporetto!

Refugees everywhere! From the distant mountains,Profughi ovunque! Dai lontani monti
they came to fill all its bridges!venivan a gremir tutti i suoi ponti!
Then, from the violated shores,S'udiva allor, dalle violate sponde,
the soft and sad murmur of the waves was heard:sommesso e triste il mormorio dell'onde:
like a sob, in that dark autumn,come un singhiozzo, in quell'autunno nero,
the Piave whispered:il Piave mormorò:

The foreigner returns!Ritorna lo straniero!

And the enemy returned;E ritornò il nemico;
for pride and hunger,per l'orgoglio e per la fame
it wanted to unleash all its desires.voleva sfogar tutte le sue brame.
It saw the open plain,Vedeva il piano aprico,
from up there: it wanted againdi lassù: voleva ancora
to feast and revel like before.sfamarsi e tripudiare come allora.

No!, said the Piave, No! soldiers,No!, disse il Piave, No! i fanti,
Never again shall the enemy take a step forward!Mai più il nemico faccia un passo avanti!

The Piave was seen swelling its banks,Si vide il Piave rigonfiar le sponde,
and as the soldiers fought, the waves fought back.e come i fanti combattevan l'onde.
Red with the blood of the arrogant enemy,Rosso di sangue del nemico altero,
the Piave commanded:il Piave comandò:

Back you go, foreigner!Indietro va', straniero!

The enemy retreatedIndietreggiò il nemico
all the way to Trieste, to Trento.fino a Trieste, fino a Trento.
And victory spread its wings to the wind!E la vittoria sciolse le ali al vento!
The ancient pact was sacred:Fu sacro il patto antico:
among the ranks, were seentra le schiere, furon visti
Oberdan, Sauro, and Battisti rising again.risorgere Oberdan, Sauro e Battisti.

At last, the Italian valor broke,Infranse, alfin, l'italico valore,
the gallows and the arms of the Executioner!le forche e l'armi dell'Impiccatore!

Safe the Alps... Free the shores.Sicure l'Alpi... Libere le sponde.
And the Piave fell silent: the waves calmed.E tacque il Piave: si placaron l'onde.
On the homeland's soil, defeated the grim Empires,Sul patrio suol, vinti i torvi Imperi,
Peace found neitherla Pace non trovò
oppressed nor foreigners!né oppressi, né stranieri!
