We begin downstairs and we end up up here.

Mostly the main crop was potatoes.

Coles, lechuga, tomates
Cabbages, lettuce, tomatoes...
Y teníamos cerezos, cerezas grandes
And we had cherry trees, big cherries,
Ya sabes, casi tan grandes como los que puedes comprar en la tienda ahora
You know, almost as big as the ones you can buy in the store now.

You had to grow your vegetables.

You had to grow it to live. yep, we had big gardens .

And you had to work hard b'y,
Es mucho trabajo duro. Todos trabajaron

Cuando tienes edad suficiente para trabajar, tenías que trabajar
When you're old enough to work you had to work.

Todo el mundo tenía que ayudarte a saberlo
Everyone had to help you know.

Pero te las arreglaste para conseguir suficiente
But you managed to get enough. usually.
Lo hicimos de todos modos
We did anyway.
Te alejaste de... creciste lo suficiente
You kept from...you grew enough
Tener semillas para el próximo año
To have seeds for the next year.
Y la gente intercambiaba semillas de ida y vuelta
And people traded seeds back and forth.
Algunos tenían más que otros
Some had more than others.
Acaban de compartir el uno con el otro
They just shared with one another.
Todos tenían que cultivar verduras si querían vivir
Everyone had to grow vegetables if they wanted to live.
Eso es lo que significó
That's what it amounted to.
Mucha gente pobre también, que necesitaba ayuda
Lots of poor people too, who needed help you know.

La gente que tenía un poco más ayudó
People who had a little more helped.
Todos ayudaron a todos los demás
Everyone helped everyone else.
Así es como vivíamos
That's the way we lived.
Si necesitabas algo, no tenías problemas para ir al lado
If you needed something you had no trouble to go next door,
Si lo tenían, lo conseguiste; de la misma manera al revés)
If they had it, you got it; same way in reverse.)
