The Christmas Spirit

Op kerstavond droomde ik dat ik de wereld rondreisdeOn Christmas Eve I dreamed I traveled all around the earth
En in mijn droom zag en hoorde ik hoe verschillende mensen de koning begroetenAnd in my dream I saw and heard the ways the different people hail the king
Wiens ster in het oosten scheen en wat een droom was hetWhose star shone in the east and what a dream it was
In Londen wandelde ik rond in Piccadilly CircusIn London Town I walked around Piccadilly Circus
Een massa mensen die hier en daar bewoog, ik vroeg me af waarA mass of people movin' here and there I wandered where
Op elk gezicht, op elke plek was het haast, ik ben te laatOn every face at every place was hurry up I'm late
Maar een vriendelijke oude man bij een kastanjekraam zei: fijne kerst, maatBut a kind old man at a chestnut stand said merry Christmas mate
En ik voelde de kerstgeestAnd I felt the Christmas spirit

In een klein stadje genesteld in Beieren, DuitslandIn a little town nestled down in Bavaria Germany
Wandelde ik verder om te zien wat daar de sfeer zou zijnI walked along to see what the feeling there would be
En hier weer was het drukte, het gehaast, het geschreeuwAnd here again was the busy din the rushin' the yellin'
Maar een vriendelijke jongen zei: Frohliche WeihnachtenBut some kind boy said Frohliche Weihnachten
Niet begrijpend wat hij zei, maar de koop en verkoop voelendNot undesratnding the words but gettin' the buyin' and sellin'
Ik voelde de kerstgeestI felt the Christmas spirit

In Bethlehem hoorde ik een hymne, een verre koor zongIn Bethlehem I heard a hymn some distant choir sang
En met andere toeristen wandelde ik naar een kerk terwijl de klokken luiddenAnd with other tourists I walked along to a church as its bells rang
Toen hoorde ik iemand tegen iemand zeggen: daar is Christus geborenThen I heard someone tell someone there's where Christ was born
Ik vraag me af of hij eruitzag als onze baby op die eerste morgenI wonder if he looked like our baby looked on that first morn
En toen voelde ik echt de kerstgeestAnd then I really felt the Christmas spirit
Van een zakenman in het Heilige Land, bij een souvenirwinkel op de stoepFrom a businessman in the Holy Land as a sidewalk souvenirshop
Kocht ik een kleine Bijbel, aangezien ik nauwelijks stopteI bought a little Bible since I'd hardly stopped
En het was in Parijs, Frankrijk, dat ik toevallig de Bijbel eruit haaldeAnd it was in Paris France somehow by chance that I took the Bible out
En terwijl ik de pagina's omsloeg, zag ik deze woorden en wist ik waar het om gingAnd as I flipped the pages I saw these words and I knew what it was all about
Want ik las: vrees niet, want zie, ik breng u goede tijdingen van grote vreugdeFor I read fear not for behold I bring you good tidings of great joy

Toen nam ik het kleine Heilige Boek, hield het dicht en stevig vastThen I took the little Holy Book held it close and tight
Ik sloot mijn ogen en visualiseerde de glorie van die nachtI closed my eyes and visualized the glory of that night
Zo plotseling kwam het bij me op, want toen ik op kerstdag ontwaakteSo suddenly it came to me for when I awoke on Christmas Day
Voelde ik de kerstgeest diep van binnen om te blijvenI felt the Christmas spirit down deep inside to stay

Boven jouw diepe en droomloze slaap gaan de stille sterren voorbijAbove Thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by
