The Parting Glass

Het Afscheidsglas

The Parting Glass

Van al het geld dat ik ooit hadOf all the money that ere I had
Heb ik het uitgegeven in goed gezelschapI spent it in good company
En van al het kwaad dat ik ooit heb gedaanAnd of all the harm that ere I've done
Was het helaas alleen aan mij gerichtAlas was done to none but me
En alles wat ik deed uit gebrek aan verstandAnd all I've done for want of wit
Kan ik nu niet meer herinnerenTo memory now I cannot recall
Dus vul mijn glas voor het afscheidSo fill me to the parting glass
Goedenacht en vreugde zij met jullie allenGoodnight and joy be with you all

Van al de kameraden die ik ooit hadOf all the comrades that ere I had
Zijn ze verdrietig om mijn vertrekThey're sorry for my going away
En van al de liefjes die ik ooit hadAnd of all the sweethearts that ere I had
Wensen ze dat ik nog een dag kon blijvenThey wish me one more day to stay
Maar aangezien het mijn lot isBut since it falls unto my lot
Dat ik moet opstaan en jullie nietThat I should rise and you should not
Zal ik zachtjes opstaan en zal ik zachtjes roepenI will gently rise and I'll softly call
Goedenacht en vreugde zij met jullie allenGoodnight and joy be with you all

Oh, als ik genoeg geld had om uit te gevenOh, if I had money enough to spend
En vrije tijd om even te zittenAnd leisure time to sit awhile
Is er een mooie meid in deze stadThere is a fair maid in this town
Die mijn hart diep heeft betoverdThat sorely has my heart beguiled
Haar rozenwangen en robijnen lippenHer rosy cheeks and ruby lips
Zij alleen heeft mijn hart in haar greepShe alone has my heart in thrall
Dus vul mijn glas voor het afscheidSo fill me to the parting glass
Goedenacht en vreugde zij met jullie allenGoodnight and joy be with you all
