Little Hans went aloneHänschen klein ging allein
into the wide world.in die weite Welt hinein.
Stick and hat suit him well,Stock und Hut steh'n ihm gut,
is in good spirits.ist gar wohl gemut.
But Mama weeps a lot,Aber Mama weinet sehr,
now has no little Hans.hat ja nun kein Hänschen mehr.
'Wish you luck' her look says,"Wünsch dir Glück" sagt ihr Blick,
'just come back soon!'"kehr nur bald zurück!"

Seven years, cloudy and clear,Sieben Jahr, trüb und klar,
Hans was in a foreign land;Hänschen in der Fremde war;
then the child remembers,da besinnt sich das Kind,
hurries home quickly.eilet heim geschwind.
But now he's not a little Hans anymore,Doch nun ist's kein Hänschen mehr,
no, he's a big Hans,nein, ein großer Hans ist er,
brown tanned, forehead and hand,braun gebrannt, Stirn und Hand,
will he be recognized?wird er wohl erkannt?
One, two, three pass by,Eins, zwei, drei geh'n vorbei,
do not know who that might be.wissen nicht wer das wohl sei.
Sister says: 'What a face',Schwester spricht: „Welch Gesicht",
does not recognize the brother.kennt den Bruder nicht.
When the mother comes near,Kommt daher die Mutter sein,
looks hardly into his eyes,schaut ihm kaum ins Aug' hinein,
she already says: 'Hans, my son!spricht sie schon: „ Hans, mein Sohn!
God bless you, my son!'Grüß dich Gott mein Sohn!"
