Fire hawk, bird of the sky,Tuli kokko, iliman lintu,
Hawk, from beyond the winds,Havukka, tuolt' tuulten päältä,
Small bird, diving as an osprey,Litti lintu, syöksy sääksi,
From the edges of the blue sky.Sinitaivon selänteiltä.

Its wings were magnificent,Siivet sil' ol' suuremmoiset,
Feathers wild and fierce,Hövhenkarvat hurjanlaiset,
Beak sharp as an axe,Nokkanuoli kovin kopra,
Eyes flashing like lightning.Silmäpari salamoiva.

Like the beautiful flight of a hawk,Kuni kokonkaunis kaatos,
Like the creative flight of a hawk,Kuni havukan luova lento,
So is my proud spirit,Niin on mieli miunki ylväs,
So is my free thought.Niin on aatos miunki vappaa.

One wing brushed the ground,Toinen siipi maata viisti,
One scratched the sky's surface,Toinen taivon kantta raapi,
Beak hooked like a sickle,Nokka koukki kuusiloit,
Eyes saw beyond the stars.Silmät näki tähtein' päähän.

It flew through three rapids,Kuli halki kolmen kosken,
Three rapids, four rivers,Kolmen kosken, neljän virran,
Into the beautiful forest land,Kaunoisehen metsänmaahan,
Into the sweet land of Finland.Suloisehen suomenmaahan.
