Fueron seis hombres de Indostan
It was six men of indostan

To learning much inclined,

That each by observation

El primero se acercó al elefante
The first approached the elephant,
Y pasando a caer
And happening to fall
Contra su lado amplio y robusto
Against his broad and sturdy side,
Inmediatamente comenzó a gritar
At once began to bawl:
¡Dios me bendiga! Pero el elefante
"God bless me! But the elephant
¡Es muy parecido a una pared!
Is very like a wall!"

El segundo, sensación del colmillo
The second, feeling of the tusk,
¡Gritó, «ho! ¿Qué tenemos aquí?
Cried, "ho! What have we here
¿Muy redondo y suave y afilado?
So very round and smooth and sharp?
Para mí es muy claro
To me 'tis mighty clear
Esta maravilla de un elefante
This wonder of an elephant
Es muy como una lanza!
Is very like a spear!"

El tercero se acercó al animal
The third approached the animal,
Y pasando a tomar
And happening to take
El tronco retorcido dentro de sus manos
The squirming trunk within his hands,
Así audazmente arriba y habló
Thus boldly up and spake:
Ya veo», dijo, «el elefante
"I see," quoth he, "the elephant
¡Es muy parecido a una serpiente!
Is very like a snake!"

El cuarto extendió una mano ansiosa
The fourth reached out an eager hand,
Y sentía acerca de la rodilla
And felt about the knee.
¿Cómo es esta bestia maravillosa?
"What most this wondrous beast is like
Es muy claro», dijo
Is mighty plain," quoth he;
Es bastante claro que el elefante
"'Tis clear enough the elephant
¡Es muy parecido a un árbol!
Is very like a tree!"

El quinto que tuvo la oportunidad de tocar el oídio
The fifth who chanced to touch the ear,
Dijo: «e'en el hombre más ciego
Said: "e'en the blindest man
Puede decir lo que esto se asemeja más
Can tell what this resembles most;

Deny the fact who can,

This marvel of an elephant

The sixth no sooner had begun

About the beast to grope,

Than, seizing on the swinging tail

And so these men of indostan
Disputado fuerte y largo
Disputed loud and long,
Cada uno en su opinión
Each in his opinion
Excediendo rígido y fuerte
Exceeding stiff and strong,
Aunque cada uno de ellos estaba en parte en la derecha
Though each was partly in the right,
¡Y todos estaban en el mal!
And all were in the wrong!
