Constantine's Dream

En Arezzo soñé un sueño
In Arezzo I dreamed a dream
De San Francisco que se arrodilló y oró
Of Saint Francis who kneeled and prayed
Para las aves, las bestias y toda la humanidad
For the birds and the beasts and all humankind

Toda la noche me sentí atraído por él
All through the night I felt drawn in by him
Y le oí llamar
And I heard him call
Como un himno lejano
Like a distant hymn

Me retiré del silencio de mi habitación
I retreated from the silence of my room
Bajando las antiguas piedras lavadas con el amanecer
Stepping down the ancient stones washed with dawn
Y entró en la basílica que llevaba su nombre
And entered the basilica that bore his name
Al ver su efigie, incliné la cabeza
Seeing his effigy I bowed my head
Y mi corazón acelerado le di a él
And my racing heart I gave to him
Me arrodillé y oré
I kneeled and prayed
Y el sueño que no pude encontrar en la noche
And the sleep that I could not find in the night
Encontré a través de él
I found through him
Vi ante mí el mundo de su mundo
I saw before me the world of his world
El campo brillante, las aves en abundancia
The bright field,the birds in abundance
Toda la naturaleza de la que cantó
All of nature of which he sang
Cantando de él
Singing of him
Toda la belleza que lo rodeaba mientras caminaba
All the beauty that surrounded him as he walked
Su naturaleza que era la naturaleza misma
His nature that was nature itself
Y lo oí. Lo oí hablar
And I heard him-I heard him speak
Y los pájaros cantaban dulcemente
And the birds sang sweetly
Y los lobos lamieron sus pies
And the wolves licked his feet

Pero no podía entregarme a él
But I could not give myself to him
Sentí otra llamada de la basílica
I felt another call from basilica itself
La llamada del arte la llamada del hombre
Tha call of art-the call of man
Y la belleza del material me alejó
And the beauty of material drew me away
Y me desperté, y vi en la pared
And I awoke,and beheld upon the wall

Who had stood where I stood
Con su pincel acarició La leyenda de la verdadera cruz
With his brush stroked The Legend of the True Cross
Imaginó que Constantino avanzara para saludar al enemigo
He envisioned Constantine advancing to greet the enemy
Pero mientras pasaba el río
But as he was passing the river
Un miedo desacostumbrado agarró sus entrañas
An unaccustomed fear gripped his bowels
Una anticipación tan abrumadora que se manifestó en olas
An anticipation so overwhelming that it manifested in waves

Durante toda la noche un sueño atrajo hacia él
All through the night a dream drew toward him
Como una cruzada que avanza
As an advancing Crusade
Dormía en su tienda en el campo de batalla
He slept in his tent on the battlefield
Mientras sus hombres estaban de guardia
While his men stood guard
Y un ángel lo despertó
And an angel awoke him
Constantino dentro de su sueño despertó
Constantine within his dream awoke
Y sus hombres vieron pasar una luz sobre el rostro del rey
And his men saw a light pass over the face of the king
El afligido rey
The troubled King
Y el ángel vino y se lo mostró
And the angel came and showed to him
El signo de la verdadera cruz en el cielo
The sign of the true cross in heaven
Y sobre él fue escrito
And upon it was written

(En este signo vencerás)
(In this sign shall thou conquer)

En la distancia las tiendas de su ejército fueron iluminadas por la luz de la luna
In the distance the tents of his army were lit by moonlight
Pero otro rey de resplandor iluminó el rostro de Constantino
But another king of radiance lit the face of Constantine
Y en la luz de la mañana
And in the morning light
El artista, viendo su trabajo estaba hecho
The artist,seeing his work was done
Vi que era bueno
Saw that it was good

(En este signo vencerás)
(In this sign shall thou conquer)

Dejó caer su cepillo y pasó a dormir por su cuenta
He let his brush drop and passed into a sleep of his own
Y soñaba con Constantino llevando a la batalla en su mano derecha
And he dreamed of Constantine carrying into battle in his right hand
Una cruz blanca inmaculada y sin mancha
An immaculate,undefiled single white Cross

Estaba lleno de un torpor
Was filled with a torpor
Y cayó en un sueño propio
And fell into a dream of his own

Desde la geometría de su corazón lo trazó
From the geometry of his heart he mapped it out
Vio al rey alzarse, equipado con armadura
He saw the King rise,fitted with armor
Sobre un caballo blanco
Set upon a white horse
Una cruz inmaculada en su mano derecha
An immaculate cross in his right hand
Avanzó hacia el enemigo
He advanced toward the enemy
Y la simetría, la perfección de sus matemáticas
And the symmetry,the perfection of his mathematics
Causó la dispersión del enemigo
Caused the scattering of the enemy
Agitado, roto, huyeron
Agitated,broken,they fled

Y Piero della Francesca despertando, gritó
And Piero della Francesca waking,cried out
¡Todo es arte, todo es futuro!
All is art-all is future!
Oh Señor, déjame morir en la parte posterior de la ventaja
Oh lord let me die on the back of advanture
Con un pincel y un ojo lleno de luz
With a brush and an eye full of light
Pero a medida que avanzaba en la edad
But as he advanced in age
La luz fue despojada de sus ojos
The light was shorn from his eyes
Y cegado, se acostó sobre su cama
And blinded,he laid upon his bed
En una mañana de octubre de 1492, y susurró
On an October moring 1492,and whispered

All of nature unspoiled-beautiful-beautiful
De tal manera que habría levantado el corazón de San Francisco
In such a manner that would have lifted the heart of St.Francis

Into the realm of universal love
