Beyond the borders of this realmJenseits der Grenzen dieses Reiches
a bard traveled far through the land.zog eine Bardin weit durch das Land.
She came with the wind and followed the morning,Sie kam mit dem Wind und sie folgte dem Morgen,
the minstrels' freedom is far from all worries...der Spielleute Freiheit ist fern aller Sorgen...
and so she found the castle on the cliff's edgeund so fand sie das Schloss an der Klippe Rand
and did not recognize the signs:und hatte die Zeichen nicht erkannt:
the darkness of the sky, the storm's song,das Dunkle des Himmels, des Sturmes Lied,
which urged her to flee and never return.das zu fliehen und niemals zur Rückkehr ihr riet.
But she walked through the gates, to see and to hear...Doch sie schritt durch die Pforten, zu seh'n und zu hör'n...
whose might this castle on the cliff belong to?wem mag dieses Schloss an der Klippe gehör'n ?
She found empty corridors and lonely halls,Sie fand leere Gänge und einsame Hallen,
silent and deserted, dark and cold.still und verlassen, dunkel und kalt.
As if a curse had banished all life,Ganz so, als hätte ein Fluch alles Leben verbannt,
and she already felt the horror's hand,und schon spürte sie schaudernd des Grauens hand,
when she heard footsteps, echoing in the distance,als sie Schritte vernahm, wie in Ferne verhallt,
and did she not see a figure in the light there?und sah sie im Licht dort nicht eine Gestalt ?
And she followed the shadow up to the tower,Und sie folgte dem Schatten hinauf in den Turm,
high above the cliff, in the roaring storm...hoch über der Klippe, im tosenden Sturm...
and suddenly stopped in her tracks,und verharrte plötzlich mitten im Schritt,
as a man emerged from the shadows and darkness.als aus Schatten und Dunkel ein Mann vor sie tritt.
Terror ran through her and fearful hesitation,Schrecken durchfuhr sie und ängstliches Zaudern,
but the light in his eyes drew her in,doch das Licht seiner Augen zog sie in Bann,
and with dark waves surrounding him,und mit dunklen Wogen, die ihn umgaben,
it seemed he fed on her terror...schien er sich an ihrem Entsetzen zu laben...
before he softly began to speakbevor er leise zu sprechen begann
and asked her to sing her saddest song for him.und bat, dass sie ihr traurigstes Lied für ihn sang.
But as gentle as his voice first sounded to her,Doch so sanft seine Stimme auch erst in ihr klang,
it pierced her heart like a sword,war sie doch wie ein Schwert, das ihr Herz durchdrang,
So she took the lute, with pain in her gazeSo ergriff sie die Laute, mit Schmerzen im Blick
and adapted to her dark face.und fügte sich so in ihr dunkles Gesicht.
She let the strings ring out for himSchon liess sie die Saiten für ihn erklingen
and began a song about tears and anger.und begann ein Lied über Tränen und Wut.
The sound of her voice filled the rooms,Der Klang ihrer Stimme erfüllte die Räume,
and her silver song painted glassy dreams,und ihr silberner Sang malte gläserne Träume,
awakening what else rested in eternal sleep;erweckend, was im ewigen Schlaf sonst ruht;
yes, even cold stone wept tears of blood...ja, selbst kalter Stein weinte Tränen aus Blut...
and just as from colors of word and sound,und gleich wie von Farben aus Wort und aus Klang,
a light wove them, piercing even the deepest darkness.wob ein Licht sie, das selbst tiefstes Dunkel durchdrang.
But one thing remained untouched and cold:Doch eines blieb weiterhin unberührt kalt:
the face and gaze of that dark figure.das Gesicht und der Blick jener dunklen Gestalt.
So she finally asked with a trembling voice:So fragte sie schliesslich mit bebender Stimme:
