On a black throne reigns upright,
He llegado a estas tierras, pero recientemente
I have reached these lands but newly
Desde un último tenue thule
From an ultimate dim thule-
De un clima salvaje y extraño que se encuentra, sutil
From a wild, weird clime that lieth, sublime,
Fuera de espacio, fuera de tiempo
Out of space- out of time.

Vales sin fondo e inundaciones ilimitadas
Bottomless vales and boundless floods,
Y los abismos, y las cuevas, y los bosques de titán
And chasms, and caves, and titan woods,
Con formas que ningún hombre puede descubrir
With forms that no man can discover
Por las lágrimas que gotean por todas partes
For the tears that drip all over;
Montañas derribando para siempre
Mountains toppling evermore
En mares sin orilla
Into seas without a shore;
Mares que aspiran inquietamente
Seas that restlessly aspire,
Surgiendo, a cielos de fuego
Surging, unto skies of fire;
Lagos que se extienden infinitamente
Lakes that endlessly outspread
Sus aguas solitarias, solitarias y muertas
Their lone waters- lone and dead,-
Sus aguas quieda- todavía y frías
Their still waters- still and chilly
Con las nieves del lirio
With the snows of the lolling lily.

Junto a las montañas- cerca del río
By the mountains- near the river
Murmurando humildes, murmurando siempre
Murmuring lowly, murmuring ever,-
Por los bosques grises, - por el pantano
By the grey woods,- by the swamp
Donde el sapo y el campamento de trito
Where the toad and the newt encamp-
Por las sombrías alquitranadas y piscinas
By the dismal tarns and pools
¿Dónde viven los demonios
Where dwell the ghouls,-
Por cada punto el más inholo
By each spot the most unholy-
En cada rincón más melancólico
In each nook most melancholy-
Allí el viajero se encuentra horrorizado
There the traveller meets aghast
Recuerdos del pasado
Sheeted memories of the past-
Formas cubiertas que comienzan y suspiran
Shrouded forms that start and sigh
A medida que pasan por el vagabundo
As they pass the wanderer by-
Formas de taculo blancas de amigos durante mucho tiempo
White-robed forms of friends long given,
En agonía, a la tierra y al cielo
In agony, to the earth- and heaven.

Porque el corazón cuyas aflicciones son legión
For the heart whose woes are legion
Es una región tranquila y relajante
'Tis a peaceful, soothing region-
Para el espíritu que camina en la sombra
For the spirit that walks in shadow
¡Es un eldorado!
'Tis- oh, 'tis an eldorado!
Pero el viajero, viajando a través de ella
But the traveller, travelling through it,
¡No te atrevas a verlo abiertamente!
May not- dare not openly view it!
Nunca se exponen sus misterios
Never its mysteries are exposed
Para el ojo humano débil sin cerrar
To the weak human eye unclosed;
Así quiere su rey, que ha prohibido
So wills its king, who hath forbid
El levantamiento de la tapa con flecos
The uplifting of the fringed lid;
Y así el alma triste que aquí pasa
And thus the sad soul that here passes
Lo ve pero a través de gafas oscuras
Beholds it but through darkened glasses.
