In a strange city lying alone

Far down within the dim west,

Where the good and the bad and the worst and the best
Han ido a su descanso eterno
Have gone to their eternal rest.
Hay santuarios y palacios y torres
There shrines and palaces and towers
(Tiempo comido torres que no tiemblan!)
(Time-eaten towers that tremble not!)
No se parecen a nada que sea nuestro
Resemble nothing that is ours.
Alrededor, levantando vientos olvidado
Around, by lifting winds forgot,
Con resignación bajo el cielo
Resignedly beneath the sky
Las aguas melancólicas yacen
The melancholy waters lie.

No descienden rayos del cielo santo
No rays from the holy heaven come down
En la larga noche de esa ciudad
On the long night-time of that town;
Pero la luz del mar espeluznante
But light from out the lurid sea
Corrige por las torretas silenciosamente
Streams up the turrets silently-
Resplandece los pináculos lejos y libre
Gleams up the pinnacles far and free-
En el interior, en las torres, en los pasillos reales
Up domes- up spires- up kingly halls-
Arriba los abanicos, arriba las paredes como babilones
Up fanes- up babylon-like walls-
Hasta los sombríos encorvados largamente olvidados
Up shadowy long-forgotten bowers
De hiedra esculpida y flores de piedra
Of sculptured ivy and stone flowers-
Hasta muchos y muchos un maravilloso santuario
Up many and many a marvellous shrine
Cuyos frisos coronados se entrelazan
Whose wreathed friezes intertwine
El viol, la violeta y la vid
The viol, the violet, and the vine.
Con resignación bajo el cielo
Resignedly beneath the sky
Las aguas melancólicas yacen
The melancholy waters lie.
Así que mezcla las torretas y las sombras allí
So blend the turrets and shadows there
Todo eso parece péndulo en el aire
That all seem pendulous in air,
Mientras que desde una torre orgullosa en la ciudad
While from a proud tower in the town
La muerte parece gigantesca
Death looks gigantically down.

Hay fanes abiertos y tumbas abiertas
There open fanes and gaping graves
Nivel bostezo con las ondas luminosas
Yawn level with the luminous waves;
Pero no las riquezas allí que yacen
But not the riches there that lie
En el ojo de diamante de cada ídolo
In each idol's diamond eye-
No los muertos con joyas
Not the gaily-jewelled dead
Tentar las aguas de su lecho
Tempt the waters from their bed;

For no ripples curl, alas!

Along that wilderness of glass-

No swellings tell that winds may be
En un mar lejano más feliz
Upon some far-off happier sea-

No heavings hint that winds have been
En los mares menos horriblemente sereno
On seas less hideously serene.

Pero he aquí, hay un revuelo en el aire!
But lo, a stir is in the air!
La ola... hay un movimiento allí!
The wave- there is a movement there!
Como si las torres se hubieran empujado a un lado
As if the towers had thrust aside,
Al hundirse ligeramente, la marea aburrida
In slightly sinking, the dull tide-
Como si sus copas hubieran dado débilmente
As if their tops had feebly given
Un vacío dentro del cielo películo
A void within the filmy heaven.
Las olas tienen ahora un brillo más rojo
The waves have now a redder glow-
Las horas están respirando débil y bajo
The hours are breathing faint and low-
Y cuando, en medio de no gemir terrenos
And when, amid no earthly moans,
Abajo, esa ciudad se asentará en este momento
Down, down that town shall settle hence,
Infierno, levantándose de mil tronos
Hell, rising from a thousand thrones,
Lo haré reverencia
Shall do it reverence.
