We wandered through abandoned streets
Shutters torn from walls
Wild dogs flit between the wrecks
We keep the children close
Somewhere inside a baby cries
A cry that must be fed
We've not enough to feed ourselves
Too late the boy breaks off and goes
Down through the buckled doors
Down to the mud and the straw
Down where the cables strobe the rupture
Down through the balls of shame
Down past the need for blame
Down where the waste piled up like sculpture
