We loved each other so muchC'eravamo tanto amati
for a year and maybe more,per un anno e forse più,
then we left each otherc'eravamo poi lasciati
I don't remember how it happened.non ricordo come fu.

But one evening we metMa una sera c'incontrammo
by a fatal combination,per fatal combinazion,
because together we took shelter,perchè insieme riparammo,
from the rain, in a doorway.per la pioggia, in un porton.

Elegant in her veil,Elegante nel suo velo,
with a white little hat,con un bianco cappellin,
sweet were her sky-blue eyes,dolci gli occhi suoi di cielo,
always sad her little face.sempre mesto il suo visin.

And I thought of a distant dream,Ed io pensavo ad un sogno lontano,
of a little room on the top floor,a una stanzetta d'un ultimo piano,
when in winter my heart tightened.quando d'inverno al mio cuor si stringeva.
As it rained, as it rained!Come pioveva, come pioveva!

“How are you?” I suddenly asked her."Come stai?" le chiesi a un tratto.
“Fine, thank you,” she said, “and you?”"Bene, grazie", disse, "e tu?".

“Look at the rain coming down!”"Guarda che acqua viene giù!".

I have to go home anyway.”tanto a casa debbo andar".
“I have an umbrella, I'll walk you.”"Ho l'ombrello, t'accompagno".
“Thank you, don't bother.”"Grazie, non ti disturbar".

A carriage passes by in time,Passa a tempo una vettura,
I call it, she says: “no,”io la chiamo, lei fa: "no",
I say: “Come on, without fear,dico: "Via, senza paura,

So slowly I took her handCosì pian piano io le presi la mano

But the memory of the pastMa il ricordo del passato
was the greatest pain for her,fu per lei il più gran dolor,
because in the world she had givenperchè al mondo aveva dato
beauty and innocence.la bellezza ed il candor.

So when at her doorCosì quando al suo portone
she gave me a smile,un sorriso mi abbozzò,
in her beautiful eyes of passionnei begli occhi di passione
a tear appeared.una lagrima spuntò.

I never saw her again,Io non l'ho più riveduta,
if she's happy who knows!se è felice chi lo sa!
But whether she's rich or lost,Ma se è ricca, o se è perduta,
she will always regret:ella ognor rimpiangerà:
