Entendant, je demandeHearing I ask
Des races sacréesFrom the holy races
Des fils de HeimdallFrom Heimdall's sons
Tant hauts que basBoth high and low
Ô ValpèreThou wilt Valfather
Que je raconte bienThat well, I relate
Des contes anciensOld tales I recall
D'hommes d'autrefoisOf men long ago

Je me souviens encoreI remember yet
Des géants d'antanThe giants of yore
Qui me donnaient du painWho gave me bread
Dans les temps passésIn the days gone by
Neuf mondes je connaissaisNine worlds I knew
Les neuf dans l'arbreThe nine in the tree
Avec de puissantes racinesWith mighty roots
Sous la terreBeneath the mold

Autrefois était l'âgeOf old was the age
Quand Ymir vivaitWhen Ymir lived
Ni mer, ni vagues fraîchesSea, nor cool waves
Ni sable là-basNor sand there were
La terre n'existait pasEarth had not been
Ni ciel au-dessusNor Heaven above
Mais un gouffre béantBut a yawning gap
Et pas d'herbe nulle partAnd grass nowhere

Alors les fils de Bur levèrentThen Bur's sons lifted
La terre planeThe level land
Midgard le puissantMidgard the mighty
Là ils créèrentThere they made
Le Soleil du SudThe Sun from the South
Réchauffait les pierres de la terreWarmed the stones of Earth
Et le sol était vertAnd green was the ground
Avec des herbes croissantesWith growing weeds

Le Soleil, la sœurThe Sun the sister
De la Lune, du SudOf the Moon, from the South
Sa main droite lançaHer right hand cast
Au-dessus du bord du cielOver Heaven's rim
Aucune connaissance elle n'avaitNo knowledge she had
De l'endroit où êtreWhere home should be
La Lune ne savait pasThe Moon knew not
Quelle puissance était la sienneWhat might was his

Les étoiles ne savaient pasThe stars knew not
Où étaient leurs stationsWhere their stations were
