Die Ballade von Terry Fox

The Ballad Of Terry Fox

Der Wind war kalt und dünnThe wind was cold and thin
Am Rand der AutobahnOut on the highway's edge
Eine einsame GestaltA solitary figure
Mit einem feierlichen SchwurWith a solemn pledge
Ein Bein aus Knochen, ein Bein aus StahlOne leg of bone, one leg of steel
Ein Hüpfer und ein schwerer AbsatzA skip and a heavy heel
Aufgewachsen in BC und ManitobaBrought up in BC and Manitoba
Er ließ uns fühlen, was er kannHe didn't fail to make us feel

Ja, der Weg war lang, wo er einst liefYeah, the road was long where he once ran
Er gab sein Bestes, was ein Mensch tun kannHe did the best any human can
Das Land zu durchqueren, das war der PlanGet across the country, that's the plan
Das ist der Geist unseres MannesThat's the spirit of our man

Er lief nicht für MedaillenHe didn't run for medals
Er lief nicht für GoldHe didn't run for gold
Sondern für die Menschen und ihre GeschichtenBut for the people and their stories
Die niemals erzählt werdenThat never will be told
Über den Asphalt und den SchotterAcross the asphalt and the gravel
Durch die Hitze und den RegenThrough the heat and rain
Trug er das Gewicht der Nation für sechsundzwanzig MeilenHe carried the nation's weight for twenty-six miles
Dann ging er wiederThen he'd go again

Ja, der Weg war lang, wo er einst liefYeah, the road was long where he once ran
Er gab sein Bestes, was ein Mensch tun kannHe did the best any human can
Das Land zu durchqueren, das war der PlanGet across the country, that's the plan
Das ist der Geist unseres MannesThat's the spirit of our man

Nun, der Weg war gesäumt von MenschenWell, the road was lined with people
Die kamen, um ihn laufen zu sehenWho came out to see him run
Doch die Lungen wurden müde und er wurde erschöpftBut the lungs grew tired and he got weary
Bevor er fertig warBefore he was done
Auf einem einsamen StückOn a lonely stretch
In der Nähe von Thunder BayNear Thunder Bay
Wurde sein Schritt gestopptHis stride was halted
Der Körper gab nachThe body gave way

Ja, der Weg war lang, wo er einst liefYeah, the road was long where he once ran
Er gab sein Bestes, was ein Mensch tun kannHe did the best any human can
Das Land zu durchqueren, das war der PlanGet across the country, that's the plan
Das ist der Geist unseres MannesThat's the spirit of our man

Die Ziellinie war in seinem KopfThe finish line was in his mind
Nicht eine Stadt auf der KarteNot a city on a map
Es gab keine AbschlusszeremonieThere was no closing ceremony
Nur ein Klatschen am StraßenrandJust a roadside clap
Er musste vielleicht den Lauf stoppenHe might have had to stop the run
Doch der Kampf geht weiterBut the fight still carries on
Für jedes Herz, das ihm folgteFor every heart that followed him
Wurde das Rennen tapfer gewonnenThe race was bravely won

Nun, der Weg war lang, wo er einst liefWell, the road was long where he once ran
Er gab sein Bestes, was ein Mensch tun kannHe did the best any human can
Das Land zu durchqueren, das war der PlanGet across the country, that's the plan
Das ist der Geist unseres MannesThat's the spirit of our man

Wenn es jemals einen Helden gabIf there ever was a hero
Wenn es jemals einen Heiligen gabIf there ever was a saint
Er lief durch Feuer und durch SchmerzHe ran through fire and through pain
Jede schwächere Seele würde ohnmächtig werdenAny lesser soul would faint
Er sagte, es ist eine Mission, die größer ist als er selbstHe said it's a mission greater than himself
Und seine Worte sind immer noch wahrAnd his words are still ringing true
Er lief für alleHe ran for everybody
Und er lief für dich und michAnd he ran for me and you
