I stopped myself at the golden gate
In the hazy blue collapsing of another day
The city outstretched, I held my breath
Hypnotized by every thought I’ve had
Mesmerized by all the living dead
I knew as I watched all the clouds cascade
From the tangled underbrush by all the capping waves
That someday I would die in a cool dark room
Lifted from a life I never knew
Drowning in a dream like dreamers do

Beneath the two feet and the rails in red
Dancing in the drift around a rushing wind
The lift in my step made the fold too thin
Floating on the overcasting, still
I’ll serenade the thought of something real
The words heartfelt as the rain came in
A memory surrounding any place I’ve been
A soft light voice in exhausting shades
Cradling a figure as it fades
Sinking in a song of open space
