Between the battle's thunder a soldier sits and wonder
And in his hand he holds a tear-stained note
He wonders how to answer the question in the letter
And once again he reads the words she wrote

Your little daughter's crying she wants to see her daddy
She wonders why it is he won't come home

She's been asking questions and I have always answered
