Some states are worse than death
And from these there is but one escape
Benumbed I awake, outside a battered building
Why am I here? Where are all these people rushing?

A stifling odor of smoke brings me out of my torpor
And my unbelieving eyes meet the torch I have in hand
Panic, I feel like my consciousness skipped an episode
What have I done? And why have I played this insane role?

And tonight an old town shall burn
in a fire lit up by my own hand

Hurling the torch, I hope that no one has spied on me
And I hasten to desert this place of calamity
As my eye runs over the houses claimed by the vicious flames
Oh consternation, I realize that I once lived in this village
