The Odour of Sanctity

Entranced in devout piety
Blessed through Christlike suffering
Miraculously inflicted
Sacred wounds give way to light

The mystery of the cross
Transcending through time
To bring common man
Into divine pain
Carved in human flesh
A testament to the word of God

Ages wandering through scripture
Knees bent in endless prayer
Worlds apart from carnal indulgence
Yearning for the love of the Nazarene

Holy advent
Apparitions invade my sleep
Bearing iconic torment
Extremities
Transfixed with ancient iron
As seraphim weep at my feet

A violent final strike thrusts me
Back into consciousness
Delusional afflictions embodied
Endure in infamy

Wounds left forever agape
Impervious to disease
Ambrosial odours emanating
Luring the masses into fervent belief

Sheep, so easily deceived
Eagerly seeking His omnipotence upon the earth
Pious psychosis floods the mind
Yielding self-inflicted crucifixion

Vigor deranged
Drove the nails in deep
Instantly rupturing tendons
A miracle defiled
Fraudulently wrought
A martyr to none
