Deuce

2005-08-16

Livin' on the Deuce in New York City
Working on Park Avenue, that's right.
I look outside the weather is not pretty,
and it's time to head home for the night.

At first I'm so very disappointed,
I like to walk to zigzag home cross town,
but today's so steamy and torrential,
I decide to head home underground.

All the word's a stage in New York City
Ever changing sets and sites and sounds
Spectacle and roles so wise and witty
Everyone in some great lost and found.

Reaching Times Square Station, see the mongrel nation
Every race and shade -- all the world on parade

There's a guy's whose preaching loud in Spanish
He says the end is near, better repent,
And a black man's hands slam down--hot drummin'
gath'rin change so's to get up the rent.

I walk on a rhythm's generating
base is building, bouncing in this cave
then there comes a crash of sweet percussion,
next a horn that juts in sweet and brave.

Exiting the station with anticipation
And all that remains of torrential rain

Is steamy streets: Hell's Kitchen's pretty gritty,
A legacy of lights that shine so bright.
Clinton boys and Chelsea girls are pretty
One or two will get you through the night.

Well, you've got to somebody sometime
Yes, you've got to love someone somehow
Any time's the right time in the city
Any day, any way. Why not now?

Livin' on the Deuce in New York City
Working in the studio all night.
And I want to thank you all for listening
And I wish everyone a good night.
