las luces parpadeando en el árbol,The lights flickering on the tree,
esferas de vidrio y ángeles brillantes,Baubles of glass and glittering angels,
regalos envueltos en plata y oroPresents wrapped in silver and gold
y verde y brillante, rojo brillante.And green and bright, shiny red.

Cuando, ante mis ojos asombrados debería aparecer,When, what to my wondering eyes should appear,
un trineo en miniatura y ocho pequeños renos...But a miniature sleigh and eight tiny reindeer..."

en un instante supe que debía ser San Nicolás.I knew in a moment it must be St. Nick.

Papá hacía sus compras en Nochebuena,Daddy would do his shopping on Christmas Eve,
llegando a casa, agitado y feliz,Flying in to the house, flustered and happy,
con los brazos llenos de papel plateado y dorado y verde escarlataHis arms full of silver and gold and green scarlet paper
y brillantes cintas de papel de seda.And bright tinsel ribbons.
Nos abrazaba a todos y abrazaba a mamá,He would hug us all and hug mother,
puedo escuchar la risa alegre de mi madre,can hear her my mother's joyful laughter,
recordar el sabor de su divinidad casera y fudge de chocolateremember the taste of her homemade divinity and chocolate fudge
Más rápidos que águilas sus corceles llegaron,More rapid than eagles his coursers they came,

El resplandor de las velas en la mesaThe glow of candles on the table
y las luces del árbol de Navidad reflejadas en nuestros ojos, ciruelas bailando en nuestras cabezas,And the lights of the Christmas tree reflected in our eyes, sugarplums dancing in our heads,
el muérdago colgado en la puerta,The Mistletoe hung in the doorway,

las bicicletas y los trineos y las carretasThe bikes and the sleds and the wagons

Nos iríamos a la cama a regañadientes -We would go to bed reluctantl -
¿Alguien duerme en Nochebuena?,Does anybody sleep on Christmas Eve?,
cuando finalmente teníamos que ir a la cama,When we finally had to go to bed,
yo rezaba en la cama con los ojos bien abiertos,I would be praying in bed with my eyes wide open,

Un saco de juguetes que había arrojado a su espalda,A bundle of toys he had flung on his back,
y parecía un vendedor abriendo su paquete.And he looked like a peddler just opening his pack.
¡Cómo brillaban sus ojos! ¡Qué alegres sus hoyuelos!His eyes how they twinkled! His dimples how merry!
¡Sus mejillas eran como rosas, su nariz como una cereza!"His cheeks were like roses, his nose like a cherry!"

Cuando tenía tres años recuerdoWhen I was three years old I remember
despertarme y mirar la sala de estarWaking up and looking out at the living room
con el árbol brillando, centelleando;At the tree shining bright, sparkling;
todos los carámbanos colgados justo asíAll the icicles hung just so
y allí estaba San Nicolás comiendo una galleta de azúcarAnd there was St Nicholas eating a sugar cookie
de la bandeja que mamá siempre le dejaba.From the plate mother always left him.
Luego vi a Santa Claus poner mi muñeca bajo el árbol.Then I saw Santa Claus put my doll under the tree.
Todavía puedo verlo, claro como el día.I can still see him , as clear as day.

"...Tenía un rostro ancho y un vientre redondo"....He had a broad face and a little round belly
que temblaba cuando reía como un tazón lleno de gelatina.That shook when he laughed like a bowl full of jelly.
Era regordete y rechoncho -un elfo viejo y alegre,He was chubby and plump -a right jolly old elf,
y reí cuando lo vi, a pesar de mí mismo.And I laughed when I saw him, in spite of myself.

No dijo una palabra, pero se puso a trabajar,He spoke not a word, but went straight to work,
y llenó todas las medias---And filled all the stockings---
y poniendo un dedo al lado de su nariz,And laying his finger aside of his nose,
y dando un guiño, subió por la chimenea..."And giving a nod, up the chimney he rose..."

Todos esos recuerdos,All those memories,
toda esa alegría, el cálido resplandor que se instala en mi corazónAll that delight, the warm glow that settles into my heart
cuando escucho las campanas del trineo llamando en la nieve que cae,When I hear the sleigh bells calling in the falling snow,
y siento la nieve en mi rostro,And feel the snow onmy face,
cuando escucho los villancicos y pienso en mi padre,When I hear the Christmas Carols and think of my father,
mi madre, hermanos y hermana, mi hermosa familia,My mother, brothers and sister, my beautiful family,
y San Nicolás,And St. Nicholas,
Ellos fueron las mejores de todas las Navidades...They were the best of all Christmases...

"...Saltó a su trineo, a su equipo dio un silbido,"...He sprang to his sleigh, to his team gave a whistle,
y todos volaron como el plumón de un cardo.And away they all flew like the down of a thistle.
Pero lo oí exclamar mientras se alejaba de la vista,But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight,
