Somebody told me the other day
That stories don't matter anymore
As long as people have a melody
They'll sing words they've never even heard before
Well, I thought I'd give it a shot
And fill a song with nothing at all
See if people still listen
Or if they turn that hollow music off

So there's nothing in this chorus
Except empty words that don't mean a thing

Even if I choke, I wonder if anybody would know

What if I told you the earth was flat
Or read numbers from a telephone book?

I sort of hope that this isn't true
‘Cause words can really change the world
But I guess I'll take comfort in knowing that while the rhythm is there
I'll at least have a few listeners
