In Arezzo träumte ich einen TraumIn Arezzo I dreamed a dream

Und ich hörte ihn - ich hörte ihn sprechenAnd I heard him-I heard him speak

Und die Wölfe leckten seine FüßeAnd the wolves licked his feet

Doch ich konnte mich ihm nicht hingebenBut I could not give myself to him
Ich fühlte einen anderen Ruf von der Basilika selbstI felt another call from basilica itself

Und die Schönheit des Materiellen zog mich fortAnd the beauty of material drew me away

Er stellte sich vor, wie Konstantin voranschritt, um den Feind zu begrüßenHe envisioned Constantine advancing to greet the enemy

Während seine Männer Wache standenWhile his men stood guard
Und ein Engel weckte ihnAnd an angel awoke him
Konstantin erwachte in seinem TraumConstantine within his dream awoke
Und seine Männer sahen ein Licht über das Gesicht des Königs ziehenAnd his men saw a light pass over the face of the king
Den unruhigen KönigThe troubled King
Und der Engel kam und zeigte ihmAnd the angel came and showed to him
Das Zeichen des wahren Kreuzes im HimmelThe sign of the true cross in heaven
Und darauf stand geschriebenAnd upon it was written

In der Ferne waren die Zelte seiner Armee vom Mondlicht erleuchtetIn the distance the tents of his army were lit by moonlight
Doch ein anderer König des Strahlens erhellte das Gesicht KonstantinsBut another king of radiance lit the face of Constantine
Und im MorgenlichtAnd in the morning light
Sah der Künstler, dass seine Arbeit vollbracht warThe artist,seeing his work was done
Sah, dass es gut warSaw that it was good

Er ließ seinen Pinsel fallen und fiel in einen eigenen SchlafHe let his brush drop and passed into a sleep of his own

Verursachte das Zerstreuen des FeindesCaused the scattering of the enemy
Aufgeregt, zerbrochen, flohen sieAgitated,broken,they fled
