Man Before Me
Robin Bacior
What if you love me for reasons that won’t last,
For a night half past,
You know morning comes up fast,
And you’re left with a day of choosing this and that.
If I make you dinner does it leave me in a dress,
A ruffled mess turning white.
Accented by my hair up tight,
Oh it just might break my temples open and reveal my fright.
If I put the man before me
Like winters before,
I have seen it decay me,
And I’ll never return to that cold.
There stood a body at the bottom of the stairs,
Just staring up there to the top.
Crippled by his age, or maybe just how new york can behave,
Meanwhile I’d stopped.
He held me like a rail,
I brought him up to his where,
Maybe the city isn’t too rushed to talk.
The need for the hand would’ve read on his face,
Had it taken place,
But I’d already chosen to walk.
If I put the man before me,
Like winters before,
I have seen it decay me,
And I’ll never return to that cold.
