I’m finally clearing up a doubt that’s been around:Ich räume hier nun endlich einmal einen Zweifel aus:
Why was Franz Schubert kicked out of the Three Maidens' house?Warum warf man Franz Schubert einst aus dem Dreimädelhaus?

The sun's golden shimmerDer Sonne güld'ner Schimmer
Dances through summer in Vienna.Umspielt das sommerliche Wien
Mrs. Schubert cleans the roomsFrau Schubert putzt die Zimmer
With diligence and turpentine.Mit Fleiß und Terpentin
She comes to the pianoKommt zum Pianoforte
With her feather duster in hand,Mit ihrem Flederwisch
But she’s almost lost for words:Da fehl'n ihr schier die Worte:
There’s a fish in the grand.Im Flügel liegt ein Fisch

Mrs. Schubert wants no pet,Frau Schubert will kein Haustier
And immediately calls for her son:Und pfeift sofort nach ihrem Sohn:
"Franz, come and take this out of here!"„Franz komm und nimm das raus hier!"
And Franz says, "I’ve already done."Und Franz meint: „Hat ihn schon."
He hid the fish in a bottle,Er barg den Fisch in einer Flasche
The fish was damp and lean,Der Fisch war feucht und schlank
And carried it in his pocketUnd trug ihn in der Tasche
Wherever he went, it reeked obscene.Wo er auch ging und stank

The problem with fish is,Das Dumme ist beim Fische
If it’s not kept nice and cool,Wird er nicht sachgemäß gekühlt
It quickly loses its freshness,Verliert er leicht an Frische
And even Franz can feel that rule.Das hat auch Franz gefühlt
For when he asks a girl nearbyDenn fragt er einmal eine Kleine
If he can hold her hand,Ob er ihr Händchen halten darf
She just shouts, "Franz, get lost,Ruft sie nur: „Franz, zieh Leine
You smell way too damn strong!Du riechst mir viel zu scharf!

You might be a genius,Du magst ja ein Genie sein
And you compose pretty well,Und komponierst ja auch nicht schlecht
But you’ll never be my suitorAber mein Freier wirst du nie sein
With that tired old fishy smell."Mit deinem müden Hecht."
So on every doorstep,So ward auf jeden Hauses Schwelle
Franz has already been chased away,Der Franz bereits vergrault
And it’s the trout’s faultUnd Schuld ist die Forelle
That’s rotting in his pants today.Die in der Hose fault

The old saying goes, and it’s true and wise:Die alte Tante Volksmund sagt bereits mit Recht und Fug:
"Through the misfortunes of others, the observant become wise."„Durch andrer Leute Schaden wird der Aufmerksame klug."
