Los Domingos

Sundays are always such sad days;Los domingos, siempre son días tristes;
I always end the afternoon longing for the past;siempre acabo la tarde añorando otros tiempos;
when one Sunday felt just like another Sundaycuando un domingo era igual a otro domingo
like, for example,era por ejemplo,
waking up later under my mom's watchful eye,levantarse más tarde y bajo la mirada vigilante de la madre,
taking a shower and styling my hair with geldarse un baño y peinarse con fijador el pelo
and fixing up my nails;y arreglarse las uñas;
putting on my tieponerse la corbata
and rushing to the friars' mass;y correr a la misa de los frailes;
and crossing the Caudal River, seeing it white,y al cruzar el río Caudal, verlo blanco,
because the coal washers weren’t working.porque en los lavaderos de carbón no trabajaban.
Helping out at massY ayudar a la misa
and waiting for the licorice from the Brother Director;y esperar el regaliz del hermano Director;
and playing ball or playing handball.y jugar al balón o jugar al frontón.
Then, at noon, hand in hand with Dad,Luego, al mediodía, de la mano de padre,
having half a vermouth with olives.tomar medio vermut con aceitunas.
The rosary at three and that smell of incenseEl rosario a las tres y aquel olor a incienso
that you had to breathe in to keep your spot.que tenías que oler por no perder tu puesto.
And the afternoon at the movies watching some showY la tarde en el cine viendo alguna función
that would make you fly and dream of some unreal sky.que te hiciera volar y soñar algún cielo irreal.
And at night finishing up homework and in bed thinkingY a la noche acabar los deberes y en la cama pensar
that tomorrow will be another day with much less light;que mañana será otra jornada con mucha menos luz;
hugging the pillow and dreaming of hearingabrazarse a la almohada y soñando escuchar
that familiar voice saying it’s already eight.la voz tan familiar que son las ocho ya.
