I launched a log into the sea,Lancei ao mar um madeiro,
I stuck a stick and a sheet to it.espetei-lhe um pau e um lençol.
With a sailor's hunchCom palpite marinheiro
I measured the height of the Sun.medi a altura do Sol.

The wind favored me,Deu-me o vento de feição,
It took me to the end of the world.levou-me ao cabo do mundo.
A vagabond's ball,pelote de vagabundo,
Scrap of a jerkin.rebotalho de gibão.

I slept on the back of the waves,Dormi no dorso das vagas,
I marveled at the edge of the beachespasmei na orla das prais
I cursed, prayed curses,arreneguei, roguei pragas,
I bit bullets and javelins.mordi pelouros e zagaias.

I singed the hairy coat,Chamusquei o pêlo hirsuto,
I had my body in living sores,tive o corpo em chagas vivas,
My gums cracked,estalaram-me a gengivas,

With my left hand I blessed myself,Com a mão esquerda benzi-me,
With my right I strangled.com a direita esganei.
A thousand times on the ground, I fought,Mil vezes no chão, bati-me,

My rotten-toothed laughterMeu riso de dentes podres
Echoed in the seven corners.ecoou nas sete partidas.
I founded cities and lives,Fundei cidades e vidas,
I broke chests and wineskins.rompi as arcas e os odres.

I trembled in the darkness of the jungle,Tremi no escuro da selva,
Still of sweats.alambique de suores.
I spread on the sand and grassEstendi na areia e na relva
Women of all colors.mulheres de todas as cores.

I shaped the keys of the worldMoldei as chaves do mundo
That others called their own,a que outros chamaram seu,
But who plunged to the depthsmas quem mergulhou no fundo
Of the dream, that was me.do sonho, esse, fui eu.

My taste is different.O meu sabor é diferente.
I taste myself and I taste like salt.Provo-me e saibo-me a sal.
One is not born unpunishedNão se nasce impunemente
